President Joe Biden has granted pardons to thousands of individuals who were convicted of using or possessing marijuana on federal lands and in the District of Columbia, according to the White House. This is part of Biden’s ongoing efforts to address racial disparities in the justice system. The latest round of executive clemencies follows a similar one issued before the 2022 midterm elections, which pardoned eligible individuals convicted of simple possession on federal lands. The recent action expands the scope of the pardon to cover a wider range of criminal offenses. Additionally, Biden is also granting clemency to 11 individuals who are serving disproportionately long sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.
