Uncovering the Hidden Power of Anthocyanins in Cannabis

Within the trichomes of cannabis flowers, a complex chemical compound factory is at work, producing the elements that contribute to the effects we feel when we smoke weed. While many of these compounds are well-known, there is one that often goes unnoticed: anthocyanins. These blue, red, or purple pigments are found in many plants, including cannabis, and are part of a class of compounds called flavonoids. Along with terpenes, flavonoids give cannabis its distinct flavors and aromas. But anthocyanins have more to offer than just color and taste. Early research suggests that they are powerful antioxidants and may have other health benefits, such as improving night vision, reducing cancer cell growth, controlling body weight, and enhancing memory.

So, while the saying “eat the rainbow” encourages us to incorporate colorful fruits and vegetables into our diets, we also suggest “smoking the rainbow” with these vibrant cannabis flowers.

Introducing Blue Lobster: A Strain Like No Other

Bred by Cipher Genetics and selected by Maine Trees, Blue Lobster is a highly sought-after strain that offers a unique and layered aroma. Described as a combination of floral dryer sheets and woodsy, slightly gassy notes, this strain is not for the faint of heart. Its intense potency makes it better suited for evening or nighttime use.

Blue Lobster is a cross between Apples and Bananas and Eye Candy, both from Compound Genetics. The strain was created by Chris Lynch, the cannabis breeder behind Cipher Genetics, who describes it as “Pixy Stix with candy gas.” While it is not yet available on the broader cannabis flower market, Cipher plans to release seeds in the summer of 2024.

The name “Blue Lobster” is a nod to the collaboration between Lynch and Maine-based cultivator Maine Trees, who selected the award-winning phenotype to produce clone cuts. As Maine is famous for its lobster, it only makes sense that this strain would bear its name.

Blue Lobster has gained recognition for its exceptional quality, winning awards at both the 2023 East Coast Zalympix in New York City and the 2023 Ego Clash in Northern California. While it may appear blue in photos, the buds are actually light green and purple, covered in a layer of trichomes. The aroma is reminiscent of tar and wood, with a hint of sea air, and the taste is sweet and woody.

When asked how he sets his cannabis breeding work apart from others, Lynch’s partner and business associate, Kate, explained that he follows his own taste preferences and looks for unique and standout flavors.

So, keep an eye out for Blue Lobster in the future and experience the power of anthocyanins for yourself. But until then, we’ll just have to admire this stunning strain from afar.
