Massachusetts Treasurer Deborah Goldberg terminated Shannon O’Brien, the Chair of the Cannabis Control Commission, on Monday, according to her office. This decision is likely to reignite the ongoing legal battle surrounding the commission. In a statement, Goldberg explained that she made the decision after carefully reviewing over 20 hours of meetings from earlier this year, as well as various documents, case law, and policies. Goldberg cited O’Brien’s “gross misconduct” and inability to fulfill her duties as reasons for the termination. She expressed regret over the decision, acknowledging O’Brien’s extensive history of public service and her initial belief that O’Brien would lead the Commission effectively. Goldberg emphasized the importance of professionalism and adherence to the mission of the CCC in her appointees’ actions.
