Texas Poll Shows Majority Support for Legalizing Cannabis

A recent statewide poll in Texas has revealed that a solid majority of six out of 10 adults support the legalization of cannabis in the state. This marks the first time the poll has shown such strong support for the issue. It seems that the issue of cannabis is gaining bipartisan support, even in states that typically lean towards one political party or the other.

60% of Texans Support Adult-Use Cannabis, According to Poll

According to the 18th annual Texas Lyceum Poll, 60% of adult Texans are in favor of legalizing adult-use cannabis. This represents a significant increase of 14% since the last time the survey asked about marijuana in 2015. The poll also asked about other topics, such as expanding legal casino gambling in the state, which received support from 57% of Texans.

Only Older Adults, Republicans, and Conservatives Divided on Support for Cannabis

The Dallas Morning News reports that the only groups divided on support for adult-use cannabis are older adults, Republicans, and self-identified conservatives. Among Texans over the age of 65 and Republicans, 49% said they support legalization, while 46% of conservatives were in favor. 31% of those polled said they oppose cannabis legislation.

Some Oppose Legalization, But Support Decriminalization

The reasons for opposing legalization were not always clear. Some simply want to decriminalize cannabis instead. Among those who oppose legalization, 42% said they would support decriminalizing possession of small amounts to a citation and fine. The poll also asked about other topics, such as politics, religion, housing, and space exploration.

Gambling Also Gaining Support in Texas

In addition to cannabis, gambling is also gaining support in Texas, according to the Texas Lyceum Poll. In November, the organization will hold a conference on South Padre Island titled “Win, Lose or Draw: The Future of Marijuana and Gambling in the Lone Star State.”

Changing Demographics and Unique Politics in Texas

The unique politics of Texas come into play when it comes to cannabis. The state has consistently voted Republican in every general election since 1976. However, in the 2020 election, the margin of victory for the Republican candidate was the narrowest since 1996. This is due to the changing demographics in the state.

Limited Access to Medical Cannabis in Texas

While patients with certain conditions can access low-level THC cannabis under the state’s compassionate use program, it is limited to certain physicians and conditions. The program was expanded in 2021 to include patients with all forms of PTSD and cancer. However, attempts at decriminalization at the city level have faced opposition from state leaders.

Upcoming Conference to Discuss Cannabis and Gambling in Texas

The Texas Lyceum will hold a conference in November to discuss the future of cannabis and gambling in the state. With changing demographics and increasing support for these issues, it will be interesting to see how they play out in the Lone Star State.
