The State of Michigan Breaks Records Again with Adult-Use Cannabis Sales
The latest data released by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) has revealed that the state has once again surpassed its previous record for adult-use cannabis sales. In March, the state collected a whopping $286.8 million in adult-use cannabis sales, accounting for 99% of all sales.
When it comes to product popularity, flower remains the top choice among consumers, with $131.4 million in sales. Vape cartridges and inhalable concentrates also saw significant sales at $54.4 million and $33.9 million, respectively. Edibles also had a strong showing with $26.3 million in sales.
Michigan’s Five Distinct Regions
The CRA divides Michigan into five distinct regions: upper lower/upper peninsula, mid lower, southwest, east/southeast, and Wayne. The east/southeast region had the highest total adult-use cannabis sales at $128,929,767, followed by the southwest region at $79,432,048. Wayne, upper lower/upper peninsula, and mid lower regions also saw significant sales at $31,845,920, $29,373,053, and $17,209,468, respectively.
When it comes to medical cannabis sales, the southwest region led with $141,535, followed by Wayne with $945,992, and east/southeast with $809,515. The upper lower/upper peninsula and mid lower regions also had notable sales at $81,273 and $79,695, respectively.
Michigan’s Cannabis Industry
Currently, Michigan has 785 licensed retailers, 260 processors, eight Class A cultivators, 112 Class B cultivators, and 845 Class C cultivators operating in the state.
Despite the record-breaking adult-use sales, medical cannabis sales continue to decline. In March, the state only collected $2.1 million from 213 provisioning centers. As of March 2024, Michigan has a total of 107,040 medical cannabis cardholders, 8,302 caregivers, and 191 physicians. The state received and approved 2,636 initial applications for medical cannabis cards and 1,158 renewals.
Out of the 27 medical conditions approved for treatment with medical cannabis, chronic pain remains the top condition, affecting 62.95% of all approved patients. Other significant conditions include severe and chronic pain (48.82%), arthritis (21.98%), post-traumatic stress disorder (8.32%), muscle spasms (6.83%), severe nausea (5.99%), cancer (2.83%), inflammatory bowel disease (1.33%), and glaucoma (1.13%).
Cracking Down on Illegal Cannabis Products
The CRA also reported that the Marijuana and Tobacco Investigation Section (MTIS) and the Michigan State Police worked together to conduct 37 seizures of illegal cannabis products. This resulted in the confiscation of 14,929 plants, 11,165 pounds of flower, and 3,133 units of marijuana product.
Michigan’s record-breaking sales in March 2024 have surpassed the previous record set in December 2023, solidifying the state’s position as a leader in the cannabis industry.
