California Senators Introduce Bill for Psilocybin Therapy Pilot Program to Heal Our Heroes

On June 6, California Senators Brian W. Jones and Josh Becker introduced a groundbreaking bill that could change the lives of veterans and first responders struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The bill, known as Senate Bill 803 or the Heal Our Heroes Act, aims to create a pilot program for psilocybin therapy.

The bill was attached as an amendment to an unrelated bill last week, and if passed, it would allow three counties in California – San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and San Diego – to conduct a pilot program for the use of psilocybin or psilocyn in treating PTSD. The program would be overseen by various approved facilitators, including licensed physicians, psychologists, social workers, and more.

The pilot program would run for three years, with data being collected and reported starting in the second year. In a press release, Senator Jones emphasized the importance of providing this opportunity for veterans. He stated, “As a dedicated advocate for veterans and first responders, I firmly believe it is our duty to support and heal the brave individuals who served our country and communities.”

Senator Becker also expressed his support for the bill, stating, “We have a responsibility to do everything possible to provide quality care to these heroes, and I am proud to joint author this bipartisan effort that will have a real impact on the people who serve our state and country.”

The bill is sponsored by two veterans organizations, the Heroic Hearts Project and Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS). Jason Moore Brown, a representative from the Heroic Hearts Project and a decorated combat veteran, is also a sponsor of the bill. In a statement, he shared his personal struggles with PTSD and mental health and expressed his belief in the potential of psilocybin to save the lives of California’s veterans.

With over 130,000 veterans lost to suicide since 2001, the need for effective treatment options is urgent. The Heal Our Heroes Act could be the first step in reducing and hopefully eliminating the veteran suicide epidemic.
